Nua Photographers arrived at dawn to Portmarnock beach and looking out towards Irelands Eye we agreed, we could be in for a nice sunrise. Not many capital cities can boast of having such fine sandy beaches so close to the centre as Dublin City can. Portmarnock Beach, is one of these beaches, Portmarnock is a well loved local amenity and very accessible to a the large population in the north Dublin area. This beach is a massive 8 km long, so it never feels overly crowded. Arriving on a January morning it was a surprise to feel such a great buzz about the place and to see so many people out enjoying nature’s best.
After setting up down on to the beach, a number of people started to arrived with backpacks and yoga mats. They happily chatted and settled themselves down on their mats, had some stretches and breathing exercises, then at sunrise took time to enjoy the wonder of sunrise followed by a race down to the sea for a dip in the icy water with good natured squeals from the cold. The photographs don’t reveal the cold but Dublin in January is a time for brave swimmers only.
A small army of colourful cyclists arrived up at the Portmarnock Kiosk and took a breather and enjoyed the spectacle of Sunrise over Irelands Eye. Within minutes the sulkie jockeys guided their horses from their horse boxes and down to take advantage of the 8km of beach. Off they ran and took to the water after a run up the beach to cool their hooves
Between dog walkers, joggers and coffee sipping strollers Portmarnock ‘s Velvet Strand is a well used and appreciated natural resource on the Northern outskirts of Dublin City. Situated south of Malahide and North of Howth it is a beautiful part of Fingal. It is a joy to see so many people out enjoying the start of the day, embracing the sea air and all with good humour.
